Internship Program

Boulder Creek Fire Protection District annually provides a unique program for San Lorenzo Valley High School students. The program is provided to introduce students to the profession of firefighting as a potential career path.   Students learn various aspects of firefighting through hands on training.  Some of the topics covered are:  vehicle extrication, structural firefighting, Wildland firefighting, hose evolutions, ladder evolutions, search and rescue, and rope rescue.  Firefighting is a physically demanding career, which requires good physical condition.  Students participate in physical conditioning during the program.

The program starts in the beginning of January and runs through the end of May each year.  Training is typically held each Tuesday and Thursday evening along with every other Saturday.

Minimum Qualifications for the program are:

  • Must be a junior or senior.
  • Must maintain minimum GPA of 2.0
  • Must attend all classes
  • Must be physically able to complete the class
  • Must have proof of medical insurance
  • Must have transportation to and from the class.

Students must provide the following equipment:  Appropriate shoes for physical conditioning (running), black steel toe boots with ankle support, black Ben Davis or Dickie style pants.

The Fire District will provide:  T-shirts, sweatpants, sweatshirt, helmet with eye protection, Schedule A and B coat and pants, gloves and student manual.  All items are to be returned at the end of the program.

Watch for us to be at the high school in December. We typically come out 2 times in December to promote the program.  Flyers will also be distributed to the counselor’s office. To apply, applications may be obtained from your counselor’s office or from the link below.

Interviews are held in December.  The following items must be brought to the interviews:

  • Completed Application
  • Completed Health Questionnaire
  • Handwritten Resume
  • Current Transcript
  • Proof of Medical Insurance
