The National Fire Prevention Association hosts Fire Prevention week nation wide every October. The Felton, Ben Lomond, Boulder Creek and Zayante Fire Protection District firefighters teach Fire Prevention Safety training to the children of the San Lorenzo Valley Elementary and Boulder Creek Elementary school children.
Depending on the age levels teaching occurs in the classroom, outdoors or in the jointly owned Fire Prevention trailer. Key messages presented include exercising a home escape plan, Dialing 911 for emergencies, Kitchen safety, family meeting place, stop drop and roll, household fire safety, basic first aid and fire extinguisher training for the older children.
Each of the Fire Districts has documented incidents where this training has been used by the children on real life emergencies.
